In
the morning, after a quick breakfast stop in Viterbo, we drove to Orvieto.
Orvieto, is built on a roc that has a lot of tunnels in it. So many, that the
grounds became vulnerable and it will collapse at one point. We took the
funicular to the top and visited the cathedral which has taken 300 years to build.
One could easily imagine that with all these glass mosaics, so refined we first
thought they were paintings and beautiful statues. Inside it was very beautiful
architecture and some fantastic frescoes. The town was just beautiful to wander
around and for snack we ordered an appetizer. It came with salami, confit
eggplant and red bell peppers, simply delicious. The town and the views were
fantastic. I found Umbria more beautiful than Tuscany in terms of
landscapes and old architecture. Once again the touristiest is not always the
best nor the most interesting.
Our
hotel in Siena
was located in the modern part, just a short stroll into the old fortified
city. We loved Siena
very much. It has a cathedral which had taken only 30 years to build and is a
bigger copy of the one in Orvieto, and a magnificent piazza de Campo where
Palio horse race is held every summer. After walking small streets we sat in a
restaurant in the piazza. We ordered pasta with saffron and truffles sauce. It
was incredible especially for such touristy location. We are not big pasta
eaters, but this one was exceptional. Very pleasant evening and night in Siena.
In the morning we drove to Pisa for a visit to Miracle Square with the leaning tower and
el Duomo. The visit was nice and we had lunch there at one of the terraces
facing the tower.
